Ecan declines water application

Plans for major a dairy farm development in the upper Waitaki Valley have been knocked back by Environment Canterbury. It has refused to grant permission for the land owners, Southdown Holdings, to irrigate 5300ha.

Land use consents have been granted but they will be of little use without access to water.

The decision is the first of a raft due over the coming months covering the use of 27,000ha of upper Waitaki Valley farm land.
