Emissions: Carbon Answer Lies In The Ground
July 26th, 2010
Leading Australian scientist Professor Tim Flannery claims farmers can solve NZ’s carbon issues through how they treat their soil. Flannery is a well-known champion of biological soil management as a means of successfully sequestering carbon. He says where carbon-sequestering processes are practiced there are increases of up to 3% in soil carbon being achieved. The soil is better protected from erosion and as grass cover increases, more root growth results. Converting just 0.2% of NZ soils a year to such practices would offset the equivalent of NZ’s national carbon dioxide emissions – although this would make no difference to the ETS as it’s currently configured.
