More Tips For Safe And Efficient Cattle Handling
December 10th, 2008
• Keep your cattle yards tidy. Make sure there is a good bin on hand with a tight lid for storing rubbish such as syringes, needles and other animal health product packaging. Make sure it is emptied regularly.
• Remove obstacles around your yards to prevent people or stock tripping on them.
• Have a first aid kit on hand and a phone handy in case of emergency especially if you are working in a relatively isolated part of your property where help is not close at hand.
• Have a weatherproof box for TB cards so you don’t lose valuable information.
• Make grading a pleasant experience for cattle. Have a hay rack hanging on a rail on the side of your yards. This is a good way to offer a reward for stock while yarded.
• Don’t work cattle in yards with a dog. If a dog is attacked by a cow the dog will try to hide behind its handler and the handler will take the full brunt of any attack. Do not prod cattle with a stick through the yard railings either.
