Near Normal Winter Weather Likely

With La Niña over, NIWA is predicting a near-normal winter through to the end of July, meaning there should be few surprises in store for farmers aside from the usual cold snaps which occur at this time of the year.

The latest outlook states over the three months to the end of July, average or above average temperatures are likely across the whole country. Most of NZ is likely to experience near normal rainfalls, but normal or above normal rainfall is likely over the north of the North Island and below average in the eastern South Island.

Normal or below normal soil moisture levels and streamflows are expected in the east of both Islands, while near normal soil moisture levels and normal or above normal streamflows are expected in the northern North Island. Normal soil moisture levels and streamflows are expected elsewhere.

Regional outlooks:
Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty: Average or above average temperatures are likely. Rainfall and stream flows are likely to be normal or above normal, while soil moisture levels, are likely to be near normal.

Central North Island, Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington: Average or above average temperatures are likely. Normal rainfall, stream flows, and soil moisture levels are likely for the period.

Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa: Near average temperatures are likely. Normal rainfall is likely overall, with normal or below normal soil moisture levels and stream flows.

Nelson, Marlborough, Buller: Average or above average temperatures are likely. Rainfall, soil moisture levels and stream flows are all likely to be near normal, averaged over the full three month period.
West Coast, Alps and Foothills, Inland Otago, Southland: Average or above average temperatures are likely. Rainfall is likely to be near normal, with near normal soil moisture levels and stream flows.

Coastal Canterbury, East Otago: Near average temperatures are likely for the period. Rainfall is likely to be near normal, while soil moisture levels and stream flows are likely to be normal or below normal.
