NZ Farm Exports: Carter Signs Dairy Co-Operation Accord With China
March 31st, 2010
NZ’s finest agricultural technologists were on display in China in a delegation led by Agriculture Minister David Carter. The visit is part of a broader Govt trade push with China. While Carter has signed a dairy cooperation agreement in Beijing, Foreign Minister Murray McCully has a schedule of meetings including Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi aimed at “maintaining our strong political and economic ties.”
China is the key trade relationship after Aust and its demand for resources and commodities has helped keep Aust’s economy growing faster than most European and North American economies. Exports jumped 45% last year and have “continued to soar despite the global downturn,” says Carter, whose group visited Fonterra’s operations outside of Beijing. They also visited Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang in Northern China, dairy farming regions with links to NZ through the Yili and Mengniu dairy companies and the Heilongjiang Dairy Project.
