NZ Irrigation Schemes: Water metering set to boost farm efficiency
October 28th, 2009
Canterbury farmers will be able to farm more efficiently with approved water metering technology by taking much of the guess work out of water application and management. Environment Canterbury Councillor Angus McKay believes water metering technology makes farming a less risky business. “It’s a management tool helping control a precious resource in the best possible way, with the ability to react quickly to make smart farm management decisions.” McKay adds farmers will know what they are doing with their water and their _allocations at any one time. Water metering will provide farmers with savings in power, labour and give them more control by being able to make informed decisions based on good data.
The move to new water metering technology is timely as new national environmental standards for water metering will come into effect later this year. This means farmers with water consents will be required to measure the amount of water they take for irrigation. Environment Canterbury and the Rakaia-Selwyn Water Metering Tender Group have investigated the most appropriate and cost effective water metering systems. The list of preferred service providers for supply and installation for a range of different water metering services, can be accessed on Environment Canterbury’s website at
