Rural Communications: Broadband To Deliver Online Tools To More Farmers
March 24th, 2010
Communications Minister Steven Joyce says Cabinet’s decision to approve the roll out of rural broadband means a “big improvement” for rural communities, especially those on 56K dial-up speeds. He’s been left in no doubt how frustrated rural communities are up and down the country. Under the proposal, 97% of rural households will get broadband services of at least 5Mbps.
The remaining 3% will get at least 1Mbps – not so fast. BT Openreach CEO Steve Robertson was reported in the UK this month as having “a huge amount of sympathy for people… if you’re only getting one meg.” Federated Farmers CEO Conor English wants the total budget for rural broadband upped to $500m, saying the Govt should seize the opportunity for “radical change” to give farmers online tools making them “the envy of the world.”

Farmers and others who increasingly rely on the internet for communications, have clamoured for better speeds and connections, saying current slow or unobtainable services hurt their businesses and productivity. The rollout is on an achievable timeframe, with the project to be put out for tender in April for an early 2011 start. Joyce has had to break a few eggs to get the rural broadband package approved, including managing a somewhat battered Telecom.
