Wool industry to move forward with strategy taskforce

October 6th, 2009

Agriculture Minister David Carter is to assemble a taskforce for the wool industry to devise a unified strategy after farmers voted against continuation of the levy paid to Meat & Wool NZ. Carter called 35 industry players, including exporters, wool brokers, farmer groups, Wool Partners International, Landcorp and Ag Research, to a summit at Parliament and won backing for the move. He chaired the meeting with MAF director-general Murray Sherwin. Carter says there was agreement the status quo is totally unacceptable. The meeting was characterised by “passionate” contributions and agreement on the need for a strategy going forward.

Carter, a staunch believer in the work of Meat & Wool, pushed for the summit after the levy vote. He says those at the meeting discussed allowing Meat & Wool to go back to farmers with another vote, which may see the levy reinstated. This is being kept on the table for early next year, when the 35 parties will be reconvened to consider the findings of the taskforce.
